Halloween Tins

My mom was thinning out her Halloween decorations, and I was happy to add to my collection.  Among these decorations was a set of three Halloween tins that were pretty dated.  Since I have been doing a lot of crafting with Mod Podge I thought it would be fun to upgrade these old tins.  I loved this project and will probably now find others to update.  Let me know if you make these.  I can’t wait to see what you all come up with.

Materials:

Old tin

Measuring tape

Decorative paper

Pencil

Scissors

Mod Podge

Brush (I prefer sponge brushes)

Washi tape (Optional)

Directions:

• Measure the tin height and circumference using the measuring tape.

• Cut your decorative paper to the measurements. (Mine was 4 ½” X 11”)
• Using the pencil trace the outline of the tin’s lid on the back of the decorative paper and cut out the circle.

• Measure the height of the lid, and cut a strip of paper using the height of the lid and the circumference (Mine was ½” X 11”)
• Using the brush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the tin.

• Carefully, place the largest of the paper pieces to the tin over the Mod Podge, smoothing as it goes around.
• Using the brush, apply another thin layer of Mod Podge to the top of tin’s lid.

• Place the circular piece of paper on the top of the tin’s lid, and smooth
• Using the brush, apply yet another thin layer of Mod Podge to the side of tin’s lid.

• Carefully, place the last piece of paper around the edge of the lid smoothing as you place it around the edge.

• Allow these to set for a time.

• If you choose, you can put the Washi tape over the thin strip on the edge of the tin’s lid.
• Using the brush, apply a thin coat of Mod Podge (I used the sparkly formula) over the tin and the lid.

• Allow to dry.

This is the promised tutorial on the pumpkin I made from jar lids using Mod Podge and decorative paper.  I think this version of this craft is just too cute.

Materials:

3 Mason jar lids

Decorative paper

Mod Podge

Brush (I like the sponge brushes)

Pencil

Xacto knife (or scissors)

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Stick

Raffia

Decorative elements (I used artificial leaves)

Directions:

• Trace the outline of the jar lids onto the back of the decorative paper you’ve chosen and cut out with knife (or scissors)

• Using the brush, apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the jar lid.  Place the circle of paper on the lid and smooth out.  I found it easiest to press firmly on the rim, then smooth from the center.

• Allow a few minutes to set, then apply another thin coat of Mod Podge over top of the paper.

• Do this to all 3 jar lids.

• Allow the jar lids plenty of time to dry.
• Once dry, place two of the lids next to each other, and apply hot glue to the center.  Place the third lid on the hot glue so that it is centered over the other two lids.  Allow a few minutes to set (I put mine upside down for this)

• While the hot glue is setting, tie the raffia onto the stick.  You can just do a bow, or you can make a loop as well so you can hang it.  Just make a loop with the raffia, then wrap the raffia around the stick under the bow.  Make sure you wrap it several times, then knot it.

• Hot glue the stick and any other decorative elements (leaves, ribbon, etc.) to the back of the lids.

• Allow this to set, and enjoy

When fall comes around, I start pulling out all of my Halloween and fall items. Everything gets transitioned to the new season, and that includes my crafting.  I recently learned how to make these personalized clipboard  at a church event, and I absolutely love them.  I feel I need to share these with all of you.  For these, you can personalize them with whatever colors and and textures you enjoy.  

I have recently started making some for Halloween, which are available for sale in my Etsy store.  For those of you inclined to make these for yourself, here is an easy-to-follow guide.  Enjoy, and feel free to share your finished products with me.  I can’t wait to see them.

Materials:

• Plain clipboard
• Decorative paper - 2 types
• Scissors
• Mod Podge
• Sponge brush
• Ribbon

Directions:

• Cut your primary paper to fit your clipboard.  The clipboard shown is a 6” X 9”, and I cut the paper to be 6” X 8 ½”.  You can cut it shorter if you like and round the corners for a closer fit.
• Cut your secondary paper in a strip.  I cut mine to be 6” X 2”

• Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to back of the clipboard.

• Position your primary paper ( the larger piece) on the clipboard over the Mod Podge.  Press down firmly pushing out air bubbles.

• Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge over the paper where you would like to place your secondary piece of paper.
• Position your secondary paper (the smaller piece) where you would like it, and press down firmly pushing out air bubbles.

• Apply one last thin coat of Mod Podge over both papers covering them entirely.

• Allow to dry.
• Tie ribbons around the loop at the top.  When cutting your ribbon, but at a slant to decrease the chances of unraveling.

What can you do with those empty jars you have lying around?  This is always a conundrum.  Fortunately, there are many crafts that can use those jars instead of throwing them away.  This craft is very simple and easy to personalize.  I have made these a few times for fall and will likely make some around Christmas this year.  You can use these jars as candle holders (I love the flameless tea lights), pen holders, snack holders, or to hold whatever knick knacks you may have that will fit.  If you don’t want to use the leaves, you can use seasonal napkins, pictures from magazines, or decorative papers.

Materials:

Empty clean jar (any size)

Mod Podge (any type, I like the sparkle type)

Sponge brushes

Artificial leaves (thin works best)

Raffia

Flameless tea light (optional)

Directions:

• Apply a coat of Mod Podge to a section of the outside of the jar.
• Place a leaf (or napkin, picture, paper, etc.) where you would like it to go.
• Apply another coat of Mod Podge over the leaf.  For the leaves, you may need a thick coating over the leaf in order for it to really soak through the leaf and hold.
• Continue steps 1-3 working in sections around the jar until you have the coverage you like.
• Allow to dry.  If you used a thick coating on the leaves like I did, you may have to leave it overnight.

This is what it will look like before it dries.  It will dry clear.

• Tie the raffia in a bow around the top of the jar.
• Enjoy.
